The Story of the Native American Love Flute
These flutes were traditionally made by Native American men to give voice to their prayers when talking to spirit. Each flute was different and constructed to ‘fit’ its owner. A man would also use his flute to aid in wooing his chosen woman. He could be near to her, just out of sight, and play his flute. The woman would then know that she had an admirer. Once the man had gained confidence (& courage!), he would leave his flute outside the woman’s lodge in the evening. If the woman liked his song she would bring the flute inside, and the man would know he could attain his dream. If the flute were left outside, he would need a new dream!
The first Native American flutes were made of bamboo, as this is a naturally occurring hollow stemmed plant. As the skill of the flute makers increased, flutes were made of soft woods, such as Elderberry, as these are easier to work. Soft woods, being lighter, also vibrate more easily and so readily amplify sound. Later, hard woods such as Maple, were also used to make flutes. These are very beautiful and hard wearing, more resistant to impact damage; which is useful if you carry your flute with you wherever you go.
At Nightstar flutes we continue in the tradition of flute making, respecting our ancestors and honouring spirit. Each flute is as individual as you are, a thing of beauty that will give you years of joy and sweet music.
Nightstar Flutes are hand crafted, Native American style flutes. A traditional five-hole, or six-hole, configuration is used and the flutes are tuned to a pentatonic scale. The finger and sound holes are burnt out of the wood. This is said to add the fire element to your flute. |
